Ensure your charger is nearby, as Apple's new software update might temporarily drain your battery.

The newest version of Apple’s operating system is here, with some users describing iOS 26 as having a ‘controversial’ new feature. If you haven't updated your iPhone yet, here’s what you need to do to get ready.

The 19th iteration of the Apple operating system was launched globally on Sunday (September 15) for iPhones.

Thousands of tech enthusiasts have already made the update and are enjoying the advantages.

iOS 26 Highlights

This free software update includes a lock screen that dynamically adjusts to ensure the subject remains visible. It also allows users to change app icons to light, dark, or transparent, and streamlines design features in Photo and Video modes for faster access.

Other notable features are dynamic messaging backgrounds, map alerts for your favorite routes, and a new Games app that lets you monitor your progress and compete with friends.

What makes iOS 26 controversial?

Initial users of iOS 26 have expressed dissatisfaction with the new ‘Liquid Glass’ design on their iPhones.

This redesign alters the appearance of app icons on your smartphone’s Home Screen and changes the way notifications are displayed. Labels and menus now feature a virtual glass effect.

According to The Independent, the Liquid Glass mode has sparked some controversy online.

While some users have criticized the aesthetic appeal, other Beta testers reported that the operating system is buggy, affecting the functionality of certain apps.

How to Upgrade Your iPhone to iOS 26?

To experience the Liquid Glass version of the iPhone operating system, simply go to your phone's settings and navigate to the ‘Software Update’ section.

iOS 26 is available for all iPhones from the iPhone 11 and iPhone SE 2nd Gen onwards.

The iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR are the only models that cannot download it.

To make the most of the new features, a technology expert from Zdnet has outlined five steps you should take before upgrading.

Eliminate Unnecessary Items

It's time to clear out the countless screenshots cluttering your Photo app and delete the games you only played once. By removing unnecessary items, the update will likely run more smoothly and quickly.

Additionally, tidying up your iPhone can free up space in your iCloud Storage, potentially saving you money.

Update All Your Apps

Downloading iOS 26 without updating all your apps may lead to glitches and significant issues, according to Zdnet.

If automatic updates are off, simply go to your App Store, tap your Profile icon, and scroll down to view any pending updates. Tap each one to update.

Backup Your Cellphone Data

After removing unnecessary photos, documents, and apps, it's important to back up your cellphone data before hitting 'upgrade'.

There’s always a risk of something going wrong, and you wouldn’t want to lose cherished images of your pets and loved ones, would you?

Charge Your Battery

You don't want your phone to run out of power halfway through an update. This is because A) it’s inconvenient and B) it could lead to significant issues.

Therefore, it's advisable to keep your iPhone plugged in during the update, or at least ensure it has more than 50 percent battery.

In its latest support document, Apple has stated that your battery may be affected ‘immediately’ after an update, especially a major one like iOS 26.

“You might notice a temporary impact on battery life and thermal performance. This is normal, as your device needs time to complete the setup process in the background, including indexing data and files for search, downloading new assets, and updating apps,” the document states.

All the more reason to keep it plugged in, right?

Ensure Your Internet Connection is Stable

For a fast and reliable update, ensure you have a strong internet connection. It's probably best to perform this software upgrade at home rather than at a local café.

Wherever you choose, make sure it’s not a place where you’ll be disconnected every few seconds.
