In an unexpected twist, Deadline has revealed that The Waterfront, Netflix's summer drama featuring Holt McCallany, Melissa Benoist, and Jake Weary, will not return for a second season. This makes the show one of the most-watched cancellations in Netflix's history for a debut series.
Premiering in late June, the series boasted a large ensemble cast and narrated the story of the Buckleys, who own a declining fishing empire in North Carolina, further complicated by the patriarch's new diagnosis. The series was poised for more adventures in future installments, having received positive reviews across the board.
For transparency, we had heard in recent weeks that the renewal prospects were positive, but Deadline's report indicated that the cancellation was a recent decision, and Netflix did not provide a comment when contacted. Deadline mentioned that the bar might be higher for acquired shows (produced by Universal TV) and also noted that their sources had been optimistic about its renewal chances.
In our original season 2 renewal article, we had been monitoring the numbers and also predicted a renewal. We’ve often used Obliterated, a canceled show from the creators of Cobra Kai, as a benchmark for the “most watched” cancellations, setting a standard that high-end productions need to surpass.
