Donald Trump's recent executive order has stirred controversy, with many viewing it as an 'attack on free speech'.

New executive orders and numerous rule changes for Americans have been rapidly issued from the White House since Trump began his second presidential term in January this year.

Among his most debated actions are a strict crackdown on immigration, including the termination of birthright citizenship, withdrawing from the Paris Agreement on climate change, eliminating diversity programs in the federal government, and implementing numerous restrictions for transgender individuals in healthcare, the military, and sports... just to mention a few.

The order declares that the American flag is 'the most sacred and cherished symbol' of the nation, representing 'American freedom, identity, and strength'.

The flag is considered so valuable that the Trump administration now regards any attacks on it, such as burning, as a 'provocative' act warranting criminal charges, with penalties of up to a year in prison.

"It is a statement of contempt, hostility, and violence against our Nation — the clearest possible expression of opposition to the political union that preserves our rights, liberty, and security," the order continues, noting that burning it could 'incite violence and riot'.

"American Flag burning is also used by groups of foreign nationals as a calculated act to intimidate and threaten violence against Americans because of their nationality and place of birth," it adds.

The order concludes that anyone found desecrating the flag will be prosecuted under criminal law, akin to violent crimes, hate crimes, and property crimes, despite existing Supreme Court precedent that protects flag burning as free speech under the First Amendment.
