Lindsay Sandiford Had Come to Terms with Her Likely Execution in Prison

A British woman on death row for more than ten years has received a significant update about her situation.

Grandmother Lindsay Sandiford was apprehended in 2012 while attempting to smuggle $2.1 million worth of cocaine (approximately 11 lbs) hidden in a false bottom of her suitcase at Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport, arriving from Bangkok, Thailand.

Due to Indonesia's stringent drug trafficking laws, she was sentenced to death by firing squad the following year.

She stated that she agreed to carry the drugs because a drug syndicate had threatened her son's life.

Sandiford had been incarcerated for over a decade at the notorious Kerobokan prison, seemingly accepting that any day could be her last.

Heather Mack, who previously served a 10-year sentence in the same prison, shared with the Mirror about Sandiford losing hope and her final wish concerning her execution.

For her final wish, Sandiford requested that her family not attend her execution and that they refrain from making a fuss about her.

She stated: “My attitude is 'If you want to shoot me, shoot me. Get on with it.”

The prison has previously been in the news for its severe overcrowding, with Sandiford reportedly sharing a 10ft by 8ft cell with 13 other women, despite it being designed for just three.

However, the 69-year-old is unlikely to face these conditions much longer as she is scheduled to be repatriated to the UK under an agreement between the two countries.

She is expected to fly back to the UK today, despite having lost hope of being released.

Mack also mentioned that she knew Sandiford was spending her days mostly alone in her cell and had stopped interacting with other prisoners.

She added that they had witnessed two other inmates being taken away for execution despite their significant efforts to change.

She mentioned: "They had transformed their lives and were different from when they were convicted, so everyone believed they would be fine. However, when Lindsay saw them being taken away to face execution, she realized her own time was approaching. That's when the harsh reality hit."

The Myanmar Accountability Project states that a death sentence might be reduced to life imprisonment.

This depends on whether the prisoner exhibits a 'commendable attitude and actions'.

Sandiford had been incarcerated for over 10 years and demonstrated good behavior during her imprisonment, leading some to expect her release months ago.
