The meeting between the two eventually became contentious

Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy reportedly engaged in a heated exchange during a volatile meeting focused on ending the war in Ukraine.

US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky had a tense White House meeting on Friday (17 October) as they attempted to resolve the conflict with Russia.

The two leaders have consistently stated their commitment to dialogue on achieving a peaceful resolution to the war, which began in 2022 when Russia launched its 'military operation'.

However, the situation reportedly became heated when they met at the White House on Friday.

According to a report by the Financial Times, tensions escalated between Trump and Zelenskyy during a shouting match.

Trump allegedly urged Ukraine to accept Putin’s ‘maximalist’ peace demands, which included Vladimir Putin’s requirement for Zelenskyy to surrender the entire Donbas region.

Zelenskyy has rejected this, and according to the report, Trump discarded maps as they exchanged expletives in their intense confrontation.

Trump also expressed frustration, saying he was 'sick' of repeatedly seeing the front line, according to an official familiar with the meeting details.

The president allegedly remarked: "This red line, I don’t even know where this is. I’ve never been there."

Trump further insisted that 'Putin will destroy you' if Zelenskyy doesn’t agree to these terms.

Zelenskyy countered by stating, 'Putin doesn’t want peace, that’s why we need pressure on him'.

This seemingly unproductive meeting followed Zelenskyy's comments to the media about his hope that Trump would agree to provide Ukraine with additional weapons in their conflict with Russia.

He was seeking confirmation from Trump that the US would supply Tomahawk cruise missiles, which have a considerably longer range than any other missiles in Ukraine’s arsenal.

Prior to the meeting, Trump avoided directly addressing whether the US would supply these weapons, stating that the topic would be discussed, but acknowledged he hoped it wouldn't be necessary.

Speaking to reporters, Trump remarked: "Tomahawks are a big deal. But one thing I have to say, we want Tomahawks, also. We don’t want to be giving away things that we need to protect our country.

"Hopefully, we can resolve the war without considering Tomahawks. I believe we are quite close to achieving that."

Trump reportedly confirmed during the meeting on Friday that these weapons would not be supplied by the US.

After his meeting with Zelensky, Trump urged both nations to 'halt their actions' and agree to end the devastating war.

In a Truth Social post, he stated: "Enough blood has been shed, with property lines being defined by War and Guts. They should stop where they are. Let both claim Victory, let History decide!"
